Two years ago, I wrote several posts about using Delicious.com for social bookmarking. Those posts are no less relevant today than when they were written in 2008. I still use Delicious.com as my bookmark manager because it allows me to keep one set of bookmarks that can be easily accessed from any computer and I still find the social aspect of it to be highly beneficial.

In effect, it's a human-edited search engine, only returning results that others have found useful. But sometime between then and now, Delicious.com improved its service. Now it also allows me to send bookmarks with my comments to others within my network, to anyone via email, or broadcast them through Twitter. This enhancement saves me time because many of my bookmarks are meant to be shared.

Two years ago, I wrote several posts about using Delicious.com for social bookmarking. Those posts are no less relevant today than when they were written in 2008. I still use Delicious.com as my bookmark manager because it allows me to keep one set of bookmarks that can be easily accessed from any computer. I still find the social aspect of it to be highly beneficial. In effect, it’s a human-edited search engine, only returning results that others have found useful. But sometime between then and now, Delicious.com improved its service. Now it also allows me to send bookmarks with my comments to others within my network, to anyone via email, or broadcast them through Twitter. This enhancement saves me time because many of my bookmarks are meant to be shared.

Delicious.com links are no-followed, meaning it doesn’t make any sense whatsoever to spam their system with a link to every page on your site. In fact, bookmarking your website pages to promote or advertise them is against Yahoo’s terms of service. Still, it does make sense to bookmark information that you want to easily return to and sometimes that WILL be to a page on your own site. And I don’t know how or why, but those no-followed links still help your page’s rank on the search engines results page. Confused? So are the experts. But here’s my take on it: Just bookmark relevant sites that you want to return to. Enjoy the ease and simplicity of saving your bookmarks this way, and know that your public bookmarks are visible and included in the Delicious.com search results. Check it out for yourself, and if you find this post useful, please share it with your friends and / or bookmark it on Delicious.com.

Can you bear one more post about the social bookmarking site, delicious? It used to be called del.icio.us, but they’ve eliminated those pesky dots, which makes the exact URL a whole lot easier to remember. Today I want to share a quick tip that I’m using to find and remember blog post ideas.

When you find an interesting news item, blog post, or even a photo, bookmark it to delicious and tag it “toblog.” Add a note to yourself in the comment box and an expiration date, if it’s time-sensitive. Since this is a personal note, not meant for sharing, click the “do not share” box. That’s all there is to it. Now wasn’t that quick and easy?

When you’re looking for inspiration for your next blog post, simply log back into delicious and search on “toblog” in your bookmarks. Keep your list tidy by editing your bookmark as soon as it’s been used in a blog post. Remove “toblog” and add any tags that you or other viewers might find useful in the future. Be sure to uncheck the “do not share” box.

I’m using variations of the same idea to keep track of blog directory submissions. One of my bookmarks leads to a huge list of blog directories. It’s tagged “todo” and not shared. As I work through the list, I add a comment to the bookmark to show where I’ve left off and the date of my last submission.

There must be hundreds of other uses for delicious bookmarks. How do you use delicious or other social bookmarking sites?
